Larry Prentice

Larry W. Prentice, FCA FCIRP, FIIC

Larry has extensive experience in advising stakeholders in a variety of industries on a range of issues including restructuring alternatives, business planning, financial strategies and assessments of execution alternatives.  As President of Prentice Strategies Inc., Larry provides advice to both private- and public sector clients on a range of issues related to insolvency and restructuring.

Larry retired as a Partner at Ernst & Young LLP in 2010, after a 35 year career in the Vancouver office.  Larry led Ernst & Young’s Restructuring practice in Vancouver for 18 years, and practiced exclusively in the restructuring and insolvency area commencing in 1980.  During his career at Ernst & Young, Larry acted as a Court officer (Monitor, Receiver-Manager, Interim Receiver and Trustee) and under advisory and private appointments in many of BC’s most significant restructuring and insolvency proceedings. 

Some of the more notable public engagements in which Larry has played a leading role included advising the City of Vancouver with respect to its loan to the developer of the Olympic Village complex, acting as Monitor in the CCAA proceedings of Pine Valley Mining Corp., the Jameson Development Group and Woodward Stores Limited, acting as Receiver of New Skeena Forest Products Inc., and leading the restructuring of JS McMillan Fisheries Ltd.  In addition, in 2005 the Supreme Court of British Columbia selected Larry to lead the task of monitoring the BC Teachers Federation during the province-wide teachers strike.

Larry has presented and written extensively on a variety of insolvency and restructuring topics. He also has been retained as a consultant to Industry Canada with respect to insolvency legislation reform and other matters.  

Larry has held leadership roles in numerous professional organizations.  He served as Chair CAIRP from 2001 – 2003, and as Chair of the Canadian Insolvency Foundation from 2003 - 2005.  From 2003 - 2009, Larry served as a Director of the Insolvency Institute of Canada.  He also has served as a member of the Management Advisory Board of the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, and as a Director of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association.  

In recognition of his contributions to the Association and to the profession, CAIRP elected Larry as a Fellow in 2004.  Larry was also elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 2006, and as a Fellow of the Insolvency Institute of Canada in 2009.

Prior to serving as Chair of CAIRP, he was Secretary-Treasurer. He has also served on various CAIRP committees, including the Continuing Education Committee and the Corporate Practice Committee and served as Co-Chair of CAIRP’s Governance Review Committee in 2011-2012.

Currently, Larry is the Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board for Rebuilding Success and is a member of the Honours and Awards Nominating Committee.
